London Architecture Tour: Power, Monuments & Museums

A three hour architectural exploration of the west side of the city from Aldwych to Kensington.

Exploring the western side of central London, this three hour privately guided tour heads west from Aldwych exploring along the Southbank, Whitehall, Westminster and to Kensington.

We’ll see mid-20th century cultural controversies, as well as the great palaces of power in the heart of Whitehall and Westminster.

Transferring to Bond Street, we will then take a route through Mayfair to visit the major redevelopment of Eero Saarinen’s US Embassy Building at Grosvenor Square before visiting the monumental set piece of Decimus Burton’s Wellington Arch and Apsley House at Hyde Park Corner.

Heading by taxi or bus, depending upon the guest’s preference to Kensington Gore, we will immerse ourselves in the spirit of the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the legacy that generated South Kensington with some of London’s biggest hitting cultural icons such as the remarkable Albert Memorial, Natural History Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum, the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal College of Music.

Palaces Of Power

In Westminster, we find the spectacular palaces of power at the heart of Britain's government and explore some of the city's great architectural highlights born of the age of peak Britannia. Alongside the majestic marvel of Westminster's perpendicular gothic parliament complex, we'll also touch upon some lesser spotted architectural sights.

Mighty Monuments

From military legends to timeless titans memorialised around the world, this tour looks at some of the most impressive monuments to the moments and great figures that have shaped Britain's influence over the years.

Meeting Point: Temple Station
We’ll meet outside Temple Station on the District & Circle lines.
Chapter One: Central Juxtapositions
Beginning with a glimpse of a brutalist behemoth and in London’s true geographical centre, our tour begins with a look at some of the most striking contrasts and mixtures of architectural style, a place which perhaps more than any other quietly tells the truth of London’s built environment.
Chapter Two: Palaces Of Power
Along Whitehall in Westminster and in Parliament Square, we’ll explore the story of Victorian eclecticism
Chapter Three: Marvellous Mayfair
Assorted hidden gems and a big hitting former diplomatic superstar located in one of London’s most well healed districts.
Chapter Four: Military Monuments
We’ll take a look at some of London’s most striking military memorials and monuments, as well as triumphal arch with a maligned history.
Chapter Five: Albertopolis: Museums & Memorials
Rooted in the philanthropic foundations of the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the tragic early death of Prince Albert, South Kensington is an invention of a modern age that yearns for the medieval and the classical whilst reaching out around the world in its hunger for knowledge and discovery.
